Summary

Orpheus Emerged, the first full-length work of fiction by Jack Kerouac to be published since the author's death in 1969, is a a unique portrait of an artist as a young man. It is a tale about love and aesthetics, life versus art, set in a large university, following the obsessions, passions, conflicts and dreams of a group of colorful, searching, bohemian intellectuals and libertines. Kerouac wrote the piece shortly after meeting Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs, Lucien Carr, and others in and around Columbia University who would form the core of the Beats, and the characters in Orpheus Emerged are based on these new friends.
