Summary

Pamela Burton Landscapes is the first monograph on renowned landscape architect Pamela Burton, winner of the 2008 Residential Design Award of Honor from the Society of American Landscape Architects for her Malibu Beach House. A native of Santa Monica, California, Burton has practiced landscape architecture for over thirty years and has lectured extensively around the world. She has received numerous commendations for her stewardship of the land, extensive knowledge of plant materials, and dedication to sustaining the cultural history of the natural environment. In her work, she aspires toward a subtle fusion of nature and architecture, seeking to inspire within the viewer a feeling of something deep and infinite. For her, landscapes are symbolic creations, representing the different layers of human consciousness; they are wild spaces in which the journey itself, a sequence of discrete experiences in space and time, is paramount. Documenting nineteen public and private projects located mostly in Southern California,Pamela Burton Landscapes reveals her subtle, intuitive understanding of the region's natural forces, topographical features, and geographic diversity, as well as her knowledge of sustainable landscape techniques. The accompanying text is a highly personal reflection on her creative process, as she describes her own encounters with the landscape and her ongoing collaborations with sculptors and land artists, while envisioning how one might experience her spaces from manifold perspectives, as a carefully choreographed excursion in harmony with the ever-changing cycles of nature.
