Excerpts

PREFACE This book is written for health care students and professionals who collect blood and other specimens as part of their job responsibilities. Practitioners who will benefit from this book include phlebotomists, nurses, respiratory therapists, medical assistants, and clinical laboratory technologists. Given the scope of the text, it can be used to cross-train health care workers in the basics of phlebotomy technique. It is also intended to be used as a reference for practicing phlebotomists who wish to pass a national certification examination. In this book we provide an explanation, using a step-by-step format, of the clinical procedures that the phlebotomist will use in a variety of settings including the hospital, clinical laboratory, and physician's office laboratory. We present the most current clinical information, including phlebotomy skills, simple laboratory tests, equipment needs, and various specimen collection techniques. In addition, safety measures, infection control, and quality control issues are presented in an easy-to-use format. Current legal and regulatory issues are also discussed as they pertain to the phlebotomist; a chapter relating to the circulatory system is included as a review. KEY FEATURES OF THE BOOK: Objectives and key terms are included for every chapter that can be used by the student as a chapter review. Glossary terms are printed inboldthe first time they are defined in the text. Current information is presented on blood-drawing techniques and equipment. Procedures are explained using a step-by-step format including a terminal performance competency. Med Tips, placed at strategic points in the narrative, provide helpful hints and useful information relating to the discussion within the text. Competency review questions at the end of each chapter assist the student with a review of material covered in the chapter. Examination review questions at the end of each chapter reflect the type of questions that are asked on a national certification examination. Information is included on performing procedures and communicating with patients who have special needs; such as children, the elderly, and hearing-impaired, blind, and difficult patients. A chart of laboratory values is contained in appendix A for easy reference. Instructions for performing common laboratory math problems are included in appendix B. Spanish terms and statements that can be used when working with the Spanish-speaking patient are included in appendix C. A four-color format throughout the text to provide clearer illustrations and photos Additional examination review questions for each chapter are in the instructor's manual.
