Trinia Oliver never believed in magic, and she doesn't want to now. Even though her mother treats her like a slave, she fears the darkness of magic more. When she lands in the Underground, a place full of a race called Shadows, she learns the road before her is fraught with danger. As the dark closes in, will she choose to fight or die?

The closer he came, the stronger the energy drew him. His broad hands stretched out in front of him with a device made of silver laced around his fingers as he began to chant: "Awaken and bind the soul." He repeated the chant lightly under his breath two more times before icy-blue light emanated from his hands in every direction. It slowly encompassed his entire body as he continued the chant. His muscles strained when the light, alive in almost every sense of the word, grew fiercer. He had no idea her soul could be so powerful, but he knew he could handle it. Finally, the entire half of her soul hovered above her form, and the man gasped as the power of her soul grew in intensity. Wild, yet oddly calm; it wanted to fight, but was waiting for the right moment to burst on him. An unexpected shiver raced up his spine from the cold nature of this part of her soul. Indecision surfaced in his mind and the soul started to buck at his weakness, forcing him to focus. He needed to bind the two halves of her soul together; he hoped they would connect without difficulty. If the two parts of her soul rejected each other, the man could not be sure what would result. He would not think about it. Easing the soul from his control, he watched the strands of light begin to dance and spread, filling the entire room with a serene presence. The man had never experienced this before; the soul had been cold and distant, and now it grew warm and peaceful. The tranquil atmosphere filled him and his guard slowly faded. Just as he began to let go, one of the strands violently whipped and attempted to escape. He shuddered and fought the crafty soul into obedience, once again in full control of the Awakening. He almost lost it; Trinia's soul knew how to erase his guard. The light strands flashed in frustration and slowly returned to their gentle dance. Heaving his breath, the man felt the girl's soul begin to weave into her body. He manipulated the soul to bind in waves, each one easier than the last. The last wave of her soul bucked and tore into him, forcing the man to grit his teeth. Shocked at the resistance, he poured more of his own power into controlling the soul. This was a risky move, fighting her soul, but it refused to succumb and bind. Using more power could damage this piece and make it weaker, or the reverse could happen; this part of her soul could absorb his energy and grow too potent for Trinia to contain. Confident that neither would happen, the man continued to fight the soul into her body. Unfortunately, the man underestimated the sheer force of Trinia's core and the reverse happened. He felt a sliver of his soul be wrenched from his body, knocking him to the floor. He helplessly watched as his power seeped into the girl's veins and groaned. His heart pumped furiously to return blood and life to his body, leaving the man crumpled on the floor as the minutes passed. Finally, he could stand; he groaned again, and not from pain. This little incident would not sit well with anyone; not Kinetic, not Cannon, and certainly not their leader, Java. Using what little power he could muster, the man raised his hand in the air and closed it slowly and deliberately. All magic left the room; the Awakening was complete.
