Excerpts

This dental hygiene review textbook is designed to assist the dental hygiene student in preparing for the National Dental Hygiene Board Examination by offering an easy flash card format to study. This book is also an excellent tool for preparing students to take state or regional board examinations. It offers a comprehensive section on local anesthesia and pain control for students who must take a local anesthesia examination to become licensed to administer local anesthesia. The textbook is designed to provide the most important information needed to take any dental hygiene board examination, and is organized based upon the National Dental Hygiene Board Specifications with the intent to help students prepare for the exam, and understand the breakdown of the exam's contents. The textbook is divided into three sections according to the examination format. Section I, Scientific Basis for Dental Hygiene Practice, encompasses all the basic science coursework. This is an important section for students to review since most students have taken some of these courses as prerequisites and will need to refresh or relearn some information. Section II, Provision of Clinical Dental Hygiene Services, includes information on assessing patient characteristics through comprehensive material on medical history review; head and neck examination; periodontal, oral, and occlusal evaluation; and clinical testing. It includes a complete radiology section along with x-rays to complement the flash cards. Information on infection control, dental emergencies, patient education, pain control, and management of the medically compromised patient can be found in this section under planning and managing dental hygiene care. Section II also includes material on performing periodontal procedures, reassessment and maintenance, preventive agents, and dental materials. Section III, Community Health and Research Principles, includes coursework related to community dental health and research methods.High Yield Facts of Dental Hygieneis in flash card format for easy reading and memorization. Key concepts are provided throughout the text to assist the student in retaining important information necessary to be successful at passing the examination. This textbook is excellent for refreshing student's memories prior to board examinations on information they have already learned in an easy-to-use "dental hygiene in a nutshell" format. However, I also encourage students to use this textbook at the beginning of their dental hygiene education to help study for exams and provide a continuous review of essential material leading up to the national, regional, or state board examinations.I encourage students to begin studying early, and to continuously review the information provided in this text throughout their dental hygiene education. I sincerely hope that this textbook benefits its readers in a positive way to successfully complete your education and licensure, which you have worked so hard to earn. Best of luck.
