Excerpts

Scooter and I looked at each other and without a word being exchanged we walked into the bushes in search of the source of the trouble. We followed the high pitched cat call for help and in just a few seconds we found what we were looking for. Deep in the thick bushes, totally hidden from anyone's view if they were walking down the street or even standing in the driveway, was something they call a cat trap. This cat trap, the mortal enemy of all cats who live outside, was a large, wire cage and inside was one scared, trapped cat. The way these things work is that they are about three feet long, one foot wide, and one foot high. On one end, the front of the trap, there is an opening for the cat to enter the trap. Once inside, the cat walks on a metal door that pushes down flat from their weight. Once the cat passes the metal door, it springs back up and the cat is trapped inside the trap. No way out. The door can't be pushed back down from the inside. Cats regularly get trapped in these things because the person who sets the trap up puts food, usually something that an outside cat would love to get to such as fish or beef from a fresh can, inside the trap. Hungry cats go after the food and soon discover that they're in trouble. These things are made so that humans can catch the cats and send them off to the animal shelter. This is no act of kindness. It's all about getting rid of outdoor cats that for some reason seem to bother some humans. Nolan, a man who had no time for dogs or cats, probably bought one of these things and hid it in his bushes. His plan worked just fine. This poor cat was imprisoned and knew it. As we approached the cage the unwilling guest of Hotel Cat Trap began speaking to us at a hundred miles an hour. First, he spoke in cat language. Then, he spoke in English. Next, he spoke both in cat language and English all at once. He was so scared that he didn't realize he was mixing up his languages as he tried to tell us what was going on. He was a mess. This was not funny business but at the same time I had to laugh. The whole thing reminded me of something that happened a lot at our house. Tony's best friend is a guy named Carlos who's from Cuba. When Carlos comes to visit, he gets so excited about things that Tony and he talk about that he speaks very fast and mixes up his sentences by speaking half English and half Spanish. No one can figure out what he's trying to say. Until Tony calms him down, Carlos spins off just like this cat. The funny part was that the trapped cat reminded me of Carlos. Like Tony did with Carlos, Scooter calmed the cat in the box down and told him to speak one language at a time. "Chillax," Scooter told our new acquaintance. "Take a deep breath, speak slowly in either cat language or English, and we'll help you out of this." In English, the trapped cat told Scooter, "I can't believe I'm so stupid. Four years on the street, three years as the leader of a pretty large crew and I fall for a dumb scam like this. What's wrong with me?" "Nobody's perfect," Scooter told him. "I've been around a lot longer than you and I do things that aren't so smart all the time. That's not important just now. What is important is that my partner and I get you out." "No way out of these things," the cat told us. "I know for a fact that some of my crew got caught inside traps before and it was all over for them. No way out of these things." "Sometimes problems are nothing more than opportunities to learn how to solve a riddle that seems impossible to solve," Scooter responded. "What?" the cat said. "What?" I said. Scooter walked quietly around the cage two or three times. She was studying the box like a policeman studies a crime scene. She was deep in thought.
