Summary

Thursday, December 7, 2006 Moscow, Russian Federation A Deserted Boathouse A block from the Katerina City Hotel 8:25 a.m. MSK Matt Dawson glanced around. Satisfied that they had securely bound him, the men who held him prisoner had foolishly laid his pistols in a corner of the room. That had been a mistake. Moving as quietly as he could, he tiptoed to the corner. He had to hurry! At any moment the men in the other room might return. Removing the Glock 29 from its holster, he walked to the door and pressed his ear against it. He could hear men's voices in the other room, but he did not recognize the language they were speaking. Calm down, Matt. You need a plan. The men on the other side of that door stood between him and his freedom. He would have to get past them to reach the street. What was he supposed to do? Should he throw open the door and start blazing away? He didn't like killing, although he had done it before in the white heat of battle, when it was either kill or be killed. In those times, it was self-defense. Would this be self-defense? Yes, but was there any other way to get out of this situation? He could see none—not if he wanted to go on living.
