Summary

From the author of GMA Book Club Pick The Light Pirate, comes a powerful, deeply resonant novel about an ambitious archaeologist in pursuit of a rare artifact from an ancient civilization that would not only change her life but potentially society at large.

Ember is an ambitious archaeologist trying to balance an unfulfilling career in academia, a disintegrating marriage, and a relationship with her mother who suffers from dementia, all while pursuing her true passion: finding a rare artifact from an ancient civilization she studies that could possibly change society. She is about to give up when she receives a message from a former student that says he has discovered the rare find overseas. As the artifact makes its way to her, she resurrects hope for a dangerous expedition that no one wants to support, just as the rest of her life begins to collapse.

After securing funding (and permission) to pursue her excavation, Ember must travel farther south than anyone has dared to go in millennia to uncover the true history of a past civilization and its end. Braving an oppressive heat, an unfamiliar wilderness, and the conflicting intentions of her fellow crew mates, Ember dares to uncover something more elusive than anyone had imagined: the context of their own origins, while coming to terms with the ruins of her own life.
