Summary

In order to be useful for practice, trade-risk controversies require interdisciplinary analysis. Although it is obvious that legal, social, cultural and political matters interfere, analyses in which these interferences are adequately considered are lacking. Fortunately a network of young(er) researchers is emerging, who aim to integrate legal and social sciences. These scholars aim to learn from other fields and to do justice to what has to be learned in terms of insights, concepts and methods. This book is the first book that aims to bring together in a symmetric way- such contributions that bridge legal and social sciences. In this book we propose to organise the high level papers according to the 'mother field' of the contributors, also to show how much is and can be gained from this new style of research. The papers also put science and politics in EU risk governance in a different perspective. The various authors, ranging from PHD students to post docs, from young scholars based in Italy or Poland to young academics working at Harvard, provide original insights into the non-trade dimensions of what usually are considered trade dossiers, ranging from genetically modified organisms to cloned animals, chemicals in children products and nanotechnology. The collection of papers enables to draw provoking and societal relevant conclusions and to draft a demanding and societal important research agenda, which should inspire both academics and practitioners.
