La excluida / The excluded

Originally published in serial form in an Italian newspaper in 1894, Pirandello's first novel addresses European society and women's roles in it at the turn of the century. Conflicts between modernity and tradition are the driving force behind the story of fictional protagonist Marta Ajala, whose husband and father bond over a masculine solidarity under which her mother and sister can only suffer silently. The novel deals with themes of infidelity, false accusation, the status of women, and other societal issues. Originalmente publicada por entregas en un periódico italiano en 1894, la primera novela de Pirandello trata sobre la sociedad europea y el papel de la mujer a finales del siglo. Los conflictos entre la modernidad y la tradición son la fuerza impulsora de la historia de Marta Ajala, la protagonista ficticia cuyo marido y padre se acercan gracias a una solidaridad masculina bajo la cual su madre y su hermana sufren silenciosamente. La novela aborda los temas de la infidelidad, la denuncia falsa, la situación de la mujer y otras preocupaciones sociales.

Luigi Pirandello was one of the most innovative and influential playwrights of the last century, best known for his comic masterpiece Six Characters in Search of an Author, and was the winner of the 1934 Nobel Prize for Literature.
