Summary

Presented for the first time, this visual reference documents 100 works by 78 artists featured in the Federal Republic of Germany’s Contemporary Art Collection and demonstrates the wide range of techniques and media—from large-scale installations, drawings, paintings, and sculpture to photography and video—that characterize the current creative practice. Launched in 1970, the exhibition presents works purchased by an acquisitions committee whose five-year mandate came to an end in 2011. It is built around a series of fundamental ideas and concepts such as historical roots, fluxus, poetry, creative self-reflection, modernism, values, historical and political references, and contemporary relevance.
