For centuries a great variety of immigrants and visitors have come to the Río de la Plata, making it one of the most diverse and contradictory cities in the world. Dictatorship and protest, wealth and crisis, street art and opera, shopping malls and autonomous groups: the capital of Argentina is a never-ending journey of historical and cultural discovery, much more than tango, football and beefsteak. A floating supermarket, a secret tunnel, a monument to Red Riding Hood and an emerging vegan subculture - in this book Buenos Aires will surprise you 111 times over.

Author Biography

Benjamin Haas, born in Tuttlingen, Germany, is a cultural anthropologist and Latin Americanist, with a particular interest in Argentine history, politics, and urban culture. He completed his civil service in Argentina in 2005 and then worked for the German-language newspaper there, the Argentine Daily. He has worked as a freelance journalist for many years, primarily for the German Press Agency, and he is now working in the field of international aid and development. Leonie Friedrich, born in Hamburg, Germany, lived in Buenos Aires as a volunteer for one year. Today she works as a private midwife in Bonn. Since their first visit, both she and Benjamin have remained fascinated by the city that lies next to the Río de la Plata, where they first met in 2008.
