Summary

Products of the modernist movement, La Grande Motte (1974), Brasilia (1960) and Chandigarh (1953) are characterised by their distinct architectural styles. Each one of these designed cities evokes questions on the place of people in the urban environment and around the modern promise of utopia. The photography of Stéphane Herbert and the poetry of Carole Lenfant are an invitation to stroll through these distinctive urban environments and to witness the plays of shadows and colours of their spectacular contours. This book is a journey through the pyramids of Jean Balladur in La Grande Motte, over the cupolas of Oscar Niemeyer in Brasilia, and across the esplanades of the Capitol building by Le Corbusier in Chandigarh.
