Summary

This is a fascinating glimpse into the lives of children in the Scottish countryside from the turn of the century until the onset of the Second World War and the great changes that occurred after it, which altered irrevocably, life in the countryside. In their own words, the children of crofters from the Western Isles tell their stories beside those of the more prosperous Lowland or North-East farmers and farm workers. They tell of their daily life and routines, their relationships with their parents, and their various roles in winning a living from the land. The result is a richly textured account of childhood in Scotland, providing a commentary on the social and economic forces that limited and propelled these young lives, putting a new and human perspective on the life of the Scottish countryside.
