Summary

The Seminoles' historic homelands include present-day Georgia and Alabama. Today, Seminoles live on reservations in Florida or in the Seminole Nation in Oklahoma. Once farmers and ranchers, the Seminoles were pushed from their fertile lands by settlers aided by the U.S. Army. They became adept at supporting themselves in the swamps of the Florida Everglades. When the army tried to drive them from even these lands, the Seminoles went to war -- the costliest Indian war in U.S. history. In Florida and Oklahoma today, the Seminoles are passing on their vibrant culture through education, the arts, and self-government.
