Brandon's friendly, informal tone and offbeat readings speak to students and encourage them to persevere in the writing process and become strong writers. Exercises as well as readings are integrated throughout every chapter of the text. In this edition, intriguing photos encourage student analysis, either individually or in groups, and serve as writing prompts; new "Mindset" features before some readings also stimulate critical thinking about the readings. Comprehensive coverage of basics teaches beginning writers how to write strong sentences and paragraphs that are both grammatically correct and well developed. Teaches a three-stage writing process. New to this edition are "Microthemes" that provide warm-up writing exercises at the beginning of most chapters, and analytical exercises based on photographs in the writing chapters.
