Summary

In an era defined by rapid technological advancements, the realm of Human Resources has become a playground for "shiny objects" – the latest HRIS, AI-driven recruitment tools, and data analytics platforms. But amidst the allure of these innovations, a crucial question arises: are we losing sight of the human element that forms the very foundation of HR?

"Shiny Objects: How Technology is Outshining the Human in HR and What to Do About It" is a compelling exploration of this critical issue. It's a call to action for HR professionals, business leaders, and anyone concerned about the soul of work in a technology-saturated world. This book goes beyond a mere critique of technology; it delves into the deeper questions of purpose, meaning, and the enduring importance of human connection in the workplace.

The Problem of Shiny Objects:

The author argues that the relentless pursuit of technological efficiency can lead to a dangerous disconnect between HR practices and the people they are intended to serve. We become fixated on metrics, algorithms, and automated processes, often at the expense of empathy, compassion, and genuine human interaction. This book shines a light on the unintended consequences of this trend, revealing how technology, while powerful, can inadvertently diminish the very humanity it seeks to enhance.

A Journey Beyond Technology:

"Shiny Objects" transcends the typical discourse on HR technology by weaving in elements of faith, purpose, and ancient wisdom. The author invites readers to consider how timeless principles can guide us in navigating the complexities of modern HR. This unique approach encourages a holistic perspective, one that recognizes the interconnectedness of technology, human values, and organizational culture.

Key Questions Explored:

Why does caring about people at work matter? The book underscores the fundamental importance of fostering a workplace culture that prioritizes human well-being and connection.
How do systems help – or hinder – our humanity? It examines the ways in which technology can either enhance or diminish our capacity for empathy, collaboration, and meaningful work.
What lessons can we learn from timeless wisdom to guide our HR practices? The author draws upon insights from various sources, including spiritual traditions and philosophical thought, to offer a fresh perspective on leadership, relationships, and stewardship in the workplace.
How can systems and people collaborate to enrich human lives? The book explores practical strategies for integrating technology in a way that empowers employees and fosters a more human-centered work environment.
A Call to Action:

"Shiny Objects" is more than just a critique; it's a call to action. The author encourages readers to:

Re-evaluate their priorities: Prioritize people over processes and recognize the intrinsic value of human connection in HR.
Embrace a human-centered approach: Design HR systems and practices that are grounded in empathy, compassion, and respect for individual needs.
Cultivate a culture of care: Foster a workplace environment where employees feel valued, supported, and empowered to thrive.
Integrate technology mindfully: Use technology as a tool to enhance human connection, rather than replace it.

The Promise of Transformation:

By the end of "Shiny Objects," readers will not only gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing HR in the digital age, but they will also be inspired to transform their own practices and perspectives. This book offers a roadmap for reclaiming the human element in HR, ensuring that technology serves humanity, rather than the other way around. It's a journey of rediscovering the heart of HR and creating a more meaningful and fulfilling work experience for all.

Author Biography

Tammy grew up in a working-class suburb of Cleveland, Ohio, as the third of four children. Fun fact—her parents named all four children with initials TAC, so they were the four TACs. Her family was a mix of white- and blue-collar workers, which shaped her strong work ethic and adaptability. Though she excelled in school and initially pursued electrical engineering at Ohio State University, life took an unexpected turn. She moved to California to live with her father, and although it wasn't a straight line, she earned a bachelor of science in business administration with a minor in human resources from CSU Bakersfield.
During her early years in California, Tammy balanced late-night shifts serving cold beers to ironworkers with daytime roles in HR, working her way up from an administrative assistant temp to an HR coordinator. These experiences gave her hands-on exposure to the workings of human resources: seasonal recruitment, employee verifications, benefits, employee inquiries, payroll processing—even creating bilingual employee handbooks.
In the early '90s, a transformative faith experience led Tammy to spend a year traveling the world, sharing her story of meeting her Savior Jesus through song. But when she returned, unexpected opportunities steered her back to corporate life, and she faced a crossroads: return to the mission field or reenter corporate America. Guided by the wise counsel of Fred, a family friend and insurance executive, she realized she didn't have to choose between her faith and career. Fred reminded her that corporate America needed Jesus just as much as tribes in distant jungles. So, with this new outlook, she became an HR systems consultant, specializing in JD Edwards, and has since spent more than thirty years advising hundreds of clients across nearly every industry, solving complex HR technological challenges with passion and dedication.
Tammy is driven by a mission beyond systems consulting—loving others, encouraging the downtrodden, and caring for people as deeply as she cares for their HR systems. This obsession inspired her to begin to write what you now have before you, believing that each reader (that's you!) is not accidental but is reading it for a greater reason. Her enthusiasm, combined with over three decades of human resources technology experience, shines through every page, offering valuable insights and inspiring your faith, with perhaps a few smiles along the way.
