In Surrounded by Idiots, Mike Gallagher, one of the top radio talk show hosts in America, takes us to the front lines of the unprecedented cultural and political war confronting all decent Americans The 2004 election was a watershed moment in our nation's history, and while it was shocking to the left to see so many red states on the electoral map, to conservatives it was just an affirmation of what they'd known all along -- conservatives are the mainstream and liberals are the fringe. It is not the time to rest or take things for granted, Mike Gallagher argues. Not at all. "Maintaining America's role as the greatest nation in the world means we must stay the course," he writes, adding, "Liberal idiocy surrounds us all. It threatens to destroy the values and lifestyles that millions of us cherish." The left has targeted every value and standard, principle and idea, concept of God, family, honor, duty, country, and decency that we hold dear. As the nation battles for its very soul in this post-9/11 world, we have Mike Gallagher to help fight against the agenda-driven liberal lunatics. The liberal loons are everywhere and Gallagher takes them all on: disgraced President Bill Clinton, and -- perish the thought! -- possible future president and carpetbagger Hillary Clinton; the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), an organization that values the lives of bugs over humans; and the anti-Bush propagandist filmmaker, Michael Moore. Then there's Gallagher's confrontation with the unpredictable, angry, and bitter bestselling author, liberal pundit, and comedian Al Franken -- the story of his anti-Dixie Chicks concert in protest of their un-American comments -- and race-baiters like Al Sharpton and big-mouth out-of-touch Hollywood elitists like Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, and Whoopi Goldberg. Surrounded by Idiots is an important -- not to mention entertaining -- look at where America is today and the possibility that the future of America will only get brighter.

Chapter One

Liberal Loons the Left of Me

"So what's it gonna be, Gallagher -- do you want to introduce your wife to Hillary Clinton or not?"

Never have I been asked a more dastardly question.

My wife, Denise, is a beautiful, kind, sweet, big-hearted woman. She is my best friend, my soul mate. Rarely a day passes that I don't thank God for her. But nobody's perfect and my beloved wife has a flaw. It is a nagging, maddening defect that regularly threatens to make my head explode.

Denise is a Democrat.

I'm not sure why. Her parents, Curt and Mary, are proud Republicans from Ohio. They, too, are pained by their daughter's political leanings. Lord knows I've tried every argument and applied all my powers of persuasion to try and win her over.

She won't budge, though.

So we're both resigned to a dreary stalemate: in our household, our votes cancel each other out. We try to avoid talking about politics whenever possible. And we still manage to love each other very much.

When I first got a radio show in New York City in the fall of 1996, my agent was George Hiltzik, the grand poo-bah of talk radio agents. He's a fast-talking bear of a man with an infectious laugh, usually screaming into two cell phones pressed to each ear. I've always loved the guy.

Now in 2000, George's son, Matthew, was working for Hillary Clinton's New York Senate race. He offered to have Matthew introduce my wife to one of her heroines, the former first lady/current carpetbagger who wanted to become a U.S. senator. Knowing how much I love my wife, George reveled in the lousy position this placed me.

"Mike, Matthew will be delighted to make this happen for you," he said, chuckling. "Hillary is speaking at an event at a Midtown synagogue next week. He'll arrange for the two of them to meet afterward. C'mon, what terrific show material you'll have! So what's it gonna be, Gallagher -- do you want to introduce your wife to Hillary Clinton or not?"

It would have been so easy to say no thanks and never tell Denise what she had missed. You can't feel deprived over something you never knew you had, right? But no, I was destined to suffer. I kept thinking how excited Denise would be if she could actually shake Madame Hillary's hand. I put my distaste and disdain for this power-hungry politician on a seesaw, balancing that with my love and affection for Denise. Up, down, up, down. You can figure out which side I chose. After all, I can complain about Hillary on the radio every day if I want; having a chance to make Denise that happy is rare.

If I were to pull this off, I wanted to make it a big surprise. After giving George the green light, I only told Denise that we were going someplace "special" where she would meet a "mystery guest." Always up for an adventure, she said, "great" and off we went.

When we arrived at the synagogue, I scanned the outside of the building: no signs indicating who was appearing there. So far, so good. Denise pointed excitedly at the security and advance men, in sunglasses and earpieces, standing outside. If she guessed the identity of the "mystery guest," she didn't say.

Inside the synagogue, George Hiltzik was grinning from ear to ear as he showed us to our reserved seats. Denise now saw security men with earpieces patrolling inside the synagogue, too. She started to think she might be meeting someone named Clinton, maybe not the Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate but perhaps the former president.

When Hillary came out to speak, the joyful look on Denise's face made it all worthwhile. She put her hands over her mouth, which she always does when excited, and stared at the woman soon to be elected New York's junior senator and -- perish the awful thought -- probably headed for a run for president one day.

After the speech, we waited in a back room to meet Mrs. Clinton. She strode right up to us with a big, broad grin. "Denise, it's so great to meet you. We really need to work on this husband of yours and bring him over to our side."

Lady, you're good ...
