Summary

Sixty years after the legendary exhibition this is tomorrow (London 1956), this book presents the first comprehensive analysis of the emergence and development of British Pop Art. Approximately 200 paintings, sculptures, architectural models, posters, photographs, television broadcasts, music and films reflect the distinctive cultural shift in Great Britain from the late 1940s through to the end of the 1960s. The richly illustrated catalogue presents works from ‘icons’ such as Eduardo Paolozzi, Richard Hamilton, Allen Jones, David Hockney and R.B. Kitaj, as well as from many other protagonists of Pop Art, including the artists Pauline Boty or Jann Haworth and the architects Cedric Price and Archigram.

Author Biography

Since February 2015 Ralf Beil is the art director of the Kunstmusem Wolfsburg. Previously he was exhibition curator and conservator at the collection of painting and sculpture of Kunstmuseum Bonn and the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts Lausanne as well as director of the Institut Mathildenhöhe Darmstadt. Uta Ruhkamp has been working as a curator and scientific assistant to the director in the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg since 2010.
