Summary

James Marie Hopper (1876-1956), known to literary journalists as "the Kipling of the Philippines," published over 450 short stories; his first collection, Caybigan, appeared in 1906. Born in Paris, he came to the USA at the age of ten. After reading law, he began writing for the San Francisco Chronicle. From 1902 to 1904 he lived in the Philippines, working as a teacher; during the First World War he became a widely syndicated foreign correspondent. Later he lived in Carmel, California, where his circle included Upton Sinclair and Sinclair Lewis. His other works include: 9009 (with Frederick Ritchie Bechdolt) (1908), The Trimming of Goosie (1909), Coming Back With the Spitball (1914) and When the West Was Young (1922).
