Summary

The publishing house of the booksellers of the orphanage in Halle/Saale was one of the most successful Prussian publishers of school books in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In particular, its geography and history textbooks for secondary schools were widely used. Using extensive archive source-material on the history of education and publishing, this study examines the factors which made the orphanage publishing house so successful. It concludes that it was the selection of qualified authors of school-books and a forward-looking management strategy which understood how to use political and educational conditions to its advantage that led to sustained success right up to the time of the Weimar Republic.
