Summary

The photographers Pieter de Vries and Martin Stock undertook an aerial photographic journey across the entire Wadden Sea. From the wide landscape of tidal flats of the “Hell’s Gate” in the Netherlands via the tidal flats, islands, and halligen of the German coast all the way to the “devil’s Horn” at the northern end of the Wadden Sea in Denmark, they flew a total of 5,000 kilometers with a single-engine Cessna, sometimes under very difficult conditions. The result is a selection of more than 20,000 photographs. With their breathtaking pictures from a bird’s-eye view, the two photographers open up a completely new perspective of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. They show us the Wadden Sea as a whole, without boundaries, and create a new angle on the large-scale forms of the coastal landscape. They bear witness to the natural connections, the interplay of the elements, and the history and stories of the Wadden Sea. Presenting previously unseen photographs of this unique natural landscape, this photobook is an homage to the Wadden Sea.
