Summary

Windows 2000 is the new operating system from Microsoft. Windows 2000 includes three types of server software: Windows 2000 Server (for workgroups and small networks); Windows 2000 Advanced Server (for larger enterprises and networks); and Windows 2000 Datacenter Server (for heavy-duty serving; for example, ISPs).

Compared to Unix, Microsoft's NT network operating systems have been very unreliable, with most networks suffering unplanned downtime that costs businesses money, data, and customers. Windows 2000 promises to be more stable than NT, enabling administrators to build high-availability networks that rival the performance and reliability of Unix systems.
