Summary

Will Henry's frontier stories draw readers irresistibly into a world that -- but for the written page -- has vanished completely. "Lapwai Winter" is set in northeastern Oregon in the time of Chief Joseph of the Nez Perces. A treaty agreement with the Indians has been violated, and their territorial rights have been revoked. Narrated by Heyets, a member of Chief Joseph's family, this gripping drama unfolds with the question of war clearly hanging in the balance. "Winter Shadows" finds a band of Mandan Indians facing the hardest winter in their tribal history. An unscrupulous Assiniboin medicine man has taken advantage of them, and their salvation may rest with an orphaned outcast. Book jacket.

Author Biography

Henry Wilson Allen, five-time winner of the Spur Award from the Western Writers of America, wrote both as Will Henry and Clay Fisher. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, his early work was in short subject departments in Hollywood Studios. He was working at MGM when his first novel, No Survivors, was published. From the outset, Allen integrated the point of view of the American Indian into his stories. Red Blizzard, his first Western novel as Clay Fisher, remains one of his best. His novels I, Tom Horn, Chiricahua, and One More River to Cross are classics of Western fiction, and over a dozen films have been based on his work
