Summary

This book examines British, American, and French legislative debates on women and explains why it matters to have woman legislators. Other studies have used quantitative data on many countries to correlate the numbers of elected women with data on gender differences in education, occupation, median age, and so on. These studies include many countries but do not focus on the legislative process. Applewhite shows that legislative debates are a fertile source for understanding gender in politics. It demonstrates that women matter because they offer a different perspective from men's and may reduce non-voting, improving representation.

Author Biography

Harriet B. Applewhite retired after 40 years with the Political Science department at Southern Connecticut State University, USA. She was named a University Professor and won the Faculty Scholar Award. She is the editor of Women in Revolutionary Paris, with Darline Gay Levy and Mary Durham Johnson, and Women in the Age of the Democratic Revolution, with Darline Gay Levy.
