Author Biography

Marlene Bumgarner is a professor of child development at Gavilan College in Gilroy, California. The mother of four children who attended afterschool programs, she developed college courses and a Certificate of Completion for afterschool staff, and has been on both sides of the profession for several decades. In 1997 she founded the Gavilan Hills chapter of the California School Age Consortium, a networking group for afterschool professionals. Dr. Bumgarner also served on the governing board of the state organization (CalSAC) and as a consultant to afterschool programs in several states, including Queensland, Australia. She has written several journal articles about afterschool programs and school-age children, and served as an National Afterschool Association accreditation endorser from 2003 until 2009.  She is a strong advocate of continuous program quality improvement in school-age programs, and a frequent conference speaker.
