Summary

The Acoustic Analysis Of Speech presents essential information on modern methods for the acoustic analysis of speech. It assumes only a modest technical background and is intended for the reader who wants to know the basic issues in speech analysis but does not have an extensive background in engineering, physics or mathematics. The book discusses the basic methods for the acoustic analysis of speech in relation to (a) the acoustic theory of speech production and (b) measures of primary interest to speech scientists, speech-language pathologists, linguists, psychologists or others who are interested in the acoustic signal of speech. Readers will gain an understanding of theory, methods and databases pertaining to speech acoustics. The book offers a simple and straightforward explanation of all aspects of acoustic analysis from recording the signal, to analysis methods, to sources of data on phonetic and suprasegmental aspects of speech. It relies on numerous illustrations and includes reference to acoustic data for several languages in addition to English.

Author Biography

Ray D. Kent is Professor of Communicative Disorders at the University of Wisconsin [em]Madison. His current primary research interest is neurogenic speech disorders in children and adults, especially the disorders associated with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, cerebellar disease, stroke, and cerebral palsy. Other research interests include speech development in infants and young children, measuring speech intelligibility and quality, acoustic analyses of speech, and theories of speech production Charles Read is Professor of Linguistics and Associate Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Wisconsin[en]Madison. He directs the Phonetics Laboratory in Linguistics and conducts research on the phonetic foundations of reading and writing. Perhaps best known for his research on children's beginning spelling, Professor Read has also studied how children and adults use prosody in recognizing the syntactic structure of sentences, as well as the linguistic and cognitive skills of adults of low literacy
