More than any other text, African Women: A Reader provides students with a much-needed comprehensive introduction to the history and experiences of African women. From a social, political, and economic perspective, the collection traces many facets of African women s experiences from antiquity to the present. The collection also addressed methodological and theoretical issues on the history of African women. The breadth and depth covered in this volume recognizes the diverse geographical and historical experiences of Africa and women s experiences. With twenty-five essays this collection is an important, innovative tool for teaching the history of African women and gender relations and offers a comprehensive context to help students understand the important contributions of women to the making of African societies. Chima J. Korieh specializes in African History, Gender Studies, and Comparative Slavery. A member of the Marquette University History faculty since 2007, Dr. Korieh s research and teaching focuses on social and economic change in colonial Africa. Prior to joining Marquette, he was associate professor of African history at Rowan University in New Jersey. He graduated with a BA (Hons) First Class from the University of Nigeria and an MA from the University of Helsinki, Finland. He also holds MPhil (History) from the University of Bergen, Norway. Dr. Korieh earned his doctorate at the University of Toronto in 2003. His first monograph, The Land Has Changed: Studies in Agrarian Change, Gender, and Society in Eastern Nigeria, c.1880 c.1980, is being published by the University of Calgary Press. Dr. Korieh has published articles and essays and edited or co-edited five volumes including: Olaudah Equaino and the Igbo World: History, Society, and Atlantic Diaspora Connections (Trenton, NJ: Africa World Press, 2009); Gendering Global Transformations: Gender, Culture, Race, and Identity (New York: Routledge, 2009); Missions, States, and European Expansion in Africa (New York: Routledge, 2007); The Aftermath of Slavery: Transitions and Transformations is Southeastern Nigeria (Trenton, NJ: Africa World Press, 2007); Encyclopedia of Western Imperialism and Colonialism since 1450. (3 Volumes. New York: Thomas Gale/Macmillan Reference USA, 2006 (associate editor, Africa)); and Religion, History, and Politics in Nigeria (Lanham, MD: University Press of America, 2005). Dr. Korieh recently completed a British Academy fellowship at Oxford University, UK in spring 2008. He is the founder and editor of Mbari: The International Journal of Igbo Studies.
