Summary

New Zealand-born architect Thomas Daniell first arrived in Japan in the early 1990s, just as the so-called "bubble" economy was collapsing. Settling in Kyoto, he went on to spend ten years as a core member of the architectural practice FOBA, during which time he also became a widely published and highly respected critic and commentator on developments in the Japanese architectural world. This book collects a broad range of his essays and articles, some published in English for the first time or previously unpublished. The book also has a foreword by renowned Japanese architect Hitoshi Abe (currently Chair of the Department of Architecture & Urban Design at UCLA) and an afterword by American academic Ari Seligmann.

Author Biography

Tom Daniell is a practicing architect, critic, and educator based in Kyoto, Japan. From 1995-2005, he was a core member of the office FOBA, and is coauthor of the 2005 monograph FOBA: Buildings.
