Summary

As the year 2001 unfolded, the United States stood at the apex of global power, possessing unrivalled military capabilities, a vibrant economy, and-most of all-great self-confidence in its sense of national security. However, after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 shattered those illusions of invincibility, the world's sole superpower embarked on a revolutionary new national strategy based on preventive uses of military force. Although this aggressive approach was formulated to enhance U.S. security, it has actually created new perils for the next generation of Americans.

Author Biography

Gregory A. Raymond is the Frank Church Professor of International Relations at Boise State University, where he is also director of the Honors College.
