Author Biography

Lou Fant (1931-2001)

was considered a leading expert in the ASL field—and considered the ambassador between two worlds. He was a teacher, interpreter, consultant, sign language coach, and actor. His accomplishments included creating the sign language for the movie Clan of the Cave Bear; being the sign language coach in Children of a Lesser God; co-founding the National Theatre of the Deaf in 1967; coaching such actors as Diane Keaton, Henry Winkler, and Mare Winningham; appearing in scores of movies, plays, TV shows, and commercials; and sign language films; and hosting the Emmy Award-winning TV show “Off Hand.” He was the author of numerous articles and five books on ASL. After his death, the Lou Fant Distinguished Service Award was set up annually to honor people who similarly achieved much in the world of interpreting. His legacy remains vital even 5 years after his death.

Barbara Bernstein Fant

(Seattle, WA), has taught beginning and advanced ASL at Seattle Central Community College sine 1990. On occasion, she contracts with the Dept of Vocational Rehabilitation and Seattle Diversity Words in providing ASL classes and tutoring to various corporations. She has served as the chairperson of the Abused Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services board.
