You'll find bed-and-breakfasts in big houses with turrets and little houses with decks, in mansions by the water and cabins in the forest, not to mention structures of many sizes and shapes in between. B&Bs are run by people who were once lawyers and writers, homemakers and artists, nurses and architects, singers and businesspeople. Some B&Bs are just a room or two in a hospitable local's home; others are more like small inns. So there's an element of serendipity to every stay in an inn or B&B. But although that's part of the pleasure of visiting these establishments, it's also an excellent reason to plan your travels with a good B&B guide.


To create this guide, we've handpicked a team of professional writers who are confirmed B&B lovers: people who love the many manifestations of the Victorian era; who go wild over wicker and brass beds,  four-posters and fireplaces; and who know a well-run operation when they see it and are only too eager  to communicate their knowledge to you. We've instructed them to inspect the premises and check out
every corner of premier inns and B&Bs in the areas they cover and to report critically on only the best. They've returned from their travels with comprehensive reports on the very best B&Bs -- establishments that promise a unique experience, a distinctive sense of time and place. All are destinations in themselves: not just places to put your head at night, but an integral part of a weekend escape. In our writers' evaluations, you'll learn what's good, what could be better; what they liked and what you might not like. We also include names and addresses of B&B reservations services, just in case you're inspired to search out additional properties on your own.


Reviews are organized by state and then by region. At the beginning of every review is the address  and telephone, with a mailing address in parenthesis -- if there is one. A double room is for two people, regardless of the size or type of bed it contains. Unless otherwise noted, rooms don't have phones or TVs. Note that even the most stunning homes, farmhouses and mansions alike, may not provide a private
bathroom for each individual. We list the number of rooms in the establishments that do have them en suite. Rates are for two, excluding tax, in high season, and include breakfast unless otherwise noted.


Although we abhor discrimination, we have conveyed informtion about innkeepers' restrictive practices so that you will be aware of the prevailing attitudes. Such discriminatory practices are most often applied to small children, traveling with their parents, who may not, in any case, feel comfortable having their offspring toddling amid breakable bric-a-brac and near precipitous stairways.


Our Best Tip


When traveling the B&B way, always call ahead. If you have mobility problems or are traveling with children or pets, if you prefer a private bath or a certain type of bed, or if you have specific dietary needs or any other concerns, discuss them with the innkeeper. If you're traveling to an inn because of a specific feature, make sure that it will be available when you get there and not closed for renovation. The same is true if you're making a special detour to take advantage of specific sights or attractions.
