Summary

This volume examines the governance outcomes of the current fragmented institutional landscape in global health. Does the space for a greater range of actors and initiatives create a healthy competitive dynamic that encourages innovation and enhances health outcomes, or does it lead to incoherence and inefficiencies? How does the general preference within Asia for state-centric mechanisms affect the functioning of global health institutions? Underlying both of the two preceding analytical concerns lies the bigger question of how actors within Asia perceive the nature of the global order, their role in it, and how global health ought to be governed. This focus area aims to consider how well the existing literature takes into account conceptions from Asia, and shed light on areas where global health governance analysis need to be improved or revised. Finally, the contributors examine the governance outcomes of the preceding analytical concerns, to identify, for example, the health outcomes of specific attitudes towards sovereignty, and particular institutional arrangements. This allows for a clearer understanding of where specific governance gaps lie, and sheds light on possible approaches to strengthen global health governance. Broader lessons for global governance, more broadly, are then drawn.
