Summary

AS REVIEWED IN EYE NEWS Feb/Mar 2007 Circulation: 4,600 UK and overseas by Amar Alwitry MRCS FRCOphth, ASTO/Glaucoma Fellow, Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham, UK "I was thoroughly impressed by the content and quality of this publication. There is a varied and extensive list of contributors with numerous well-known and well-respected glaucoma surgeons from the whole of Europe and the US taking part. The first chapter brings the avid glaucoma surgeon down to earth with a discussion of the benefits of surgery versus medical therapy of glaucoma. It focuses the attention of the reader nicely on the fundamental considerations that should be addressed before progressing into the rest of the text and embarking upon surgical intervention. The book does not purely focus upon surgical intervention but also covers non -surgical treatment issues such as the management of angle-closure glaucoma and a welcome discussion of laser trabeculoplasty and the role that selective laser trabeculoplasty may play in the not too distant future of glaucoma management. The size of the book was slightly larger than I would have liked however this ensures that the numerous and detailed images are clear, and of a size to ensure that fine details are obvious. There was some degree of repetition in the discussions on non-penetrating glaucoma surgery however, the three chapters on the topic did manage to convey a slightly different slant to the technique which may be valuable to the reader. My delight at seeing the presence of an included CD-ROM in the back of the book was completely deflated which I actually accessed the disc. The contents are simply digital images of all of the illustrations with the text. Although this is handy to have, I feel that they could have easily made much more use of this digital media. The inclusion of digital video clips of complete procedures or supplemental illustrations of complications and anatomical variations encountered with the various techniques would have been a logical and highly desirable addition to this manual. Despite several minor negative points, I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the text and the information portrayed therein. The writing is clear and concise allowing the reader to understand the background of the operation, the indications, the step-by-step surgical technique and the postoperative management. Practising glaucoma surgeons could easily use this text as a surgical manual to modify their current technique or use it as an instructional manual to embark upon a new glaucoma procedure. The text would be ideal for senior trainees interested in a career in glaucoma and also established glaucoma surgeons who would like a refresher on the ever-expanding repertoire of different modern techniques available. I can imagine that this text would be invaluable to those glaucoma surgeons out there taking tentative steps towards non-penetrating glaucoma surgery. The chapter entitles "Shortening the Learning Curve of Deep Sclerectomy" was particularly welcome as it clearly acknowledged the difficulties encountered during the transition phase to non-penetrating surgery and offered practical and helpful tips to overcome these teething problems. I found the text well constructed and easy to read and would recommend it to all those with an interest in glaucoma surgery whatever their level of expertise. Value for money."
