Summary

The works of Ayse Erkmen exist almost exclusively as ephemeral scenarios. The actual exhibition venue is always the starting point of her installations that, like her sculptures and films, trigger a broad range of associations. It lies in the nature of this working method that the work can only be experienced in situ, and after that only in photo documentations. The artist compiled the documentation of 40 of her most important works since 1985 for this book, presented in full-page illustrations and explanatory texts. The overview is supplemented by an illustrated chronology of Ayse Erkmen's shows and works from1969 until today. In a text section marked by different paper, the authors explain the artist's working method and the way she deals with both empty and inhabited spaces, and raise questions related to the political dimension, to language and identity. Literary texts by Faith Ozguven and Nobel Prize winner Orhan Pamuk offer additional reflections on Erkmen's oeuvre. English and German text.
