Summary

The proposed book is a second edition to 5-minute veterinary consult – avian. As such the aims, scope, and target audience will be similar. The first edition was published in 2016 and is in need of an update. Blackwell's Five-Minute Veterinary Consult: Avian Second Edition fills a unique niche in providing comprehensive information on common topics in avian medicine in a highly organized and efficient manner allowing busy practitioners and students to quickly find the much needed information. By being in the 5-minute book series, it also allows to present information in a familiar way to many readers. Avian medicine is constantly evolving and the types of species seen by private practitioners also tends to change over time. As it has been 5 years since the last edition, there is a need to update, but also expand the information. The first edition was quite small when compared to similar books in that 5-minute series and I think it could be considerably expanded to allow more topics to be available to veterinary practitioners. Some topics will also be re-organized and broken down in several chapters to make it less confusing. One example would be the "tumors" chapter which dealt with all tumours in a single chapter even though many tend to present differently and the diagnostic work up is also different. Another example is the "herpesvirus" chapter that put all avian herpesviruses together even though each cause unique diseases in different species of birds. Many topics were also missing such as many backyard poultry diseases and other diseases of pet birds. The target audience would remain mostly the same as the previous edition. Although we plan on considerably expanding this edition to make it more necessary to purchase a second edition of this book.

Blackwell's Five-Minute Veterinary Consult: Avian presents complete information on diseases and conditions seen in birds in a quick-reference format ideal for clinical practice. This new volume in the Five-Minute Veterinary Consult series offers 200 identically formatted topics on avian syndromes, written by the leading experts in the field. A companion website provides algorithms, procedure guides, and client education handouts, which can be downloaded, edited, and given to clients. Covering topics ranging from adenovirus to xanthoma, the book makes it easy to quickly find information on common conditions seen in birds. Whether avian patients are a regular or occasional part of your caseload, you'll find this practical reference an invaluable addition to your practice library.
