Excerpts

IntroductionCreating butterfly refuges in urban backyards may help offset the habitat destruction perpetrated by the human race on these beautiful insects. A successful urban butterfly garden will provide larval and adult food plantings, as well as flat rocks and mud puddles in a sunny, wind-free location. Butterflies requiring wooded or other specialized habitats may be enticed into your garden by the inclusion of a few of their favorite trees or features. It is not difficult to create a butterfly preserve. One must simply adopt an attitude and approach to gardening that prioritizes the needs and likes of butterflies over those of humans. In fact, the two are not totally incompatible. Butterfly gardens and people gardens can exist in parallel with a few modifications on our part.
