The past meets the future in Book Four of the Code Word series.
The EMP blast set off twenty years ago, at the end of Book Three, foiled plans for mass extermination but divided the country. Everything west of the Rockies had its power grid destroyed and has become a Wild West, governed by the Organites, while east of the Mississippi is still tightly controlled by the ubiquitous AI system Apex and is racing ever more quickly into the future. The area in between is left as a hotly contested, lawless war zone.
Adam, a restless twenty-year-old roaming the country with his parents, Shawn and Destiny, finds an antiquated communications device and makes contact with a young woman, Joan, from Apex’s side. The two will develop a profound bond, even as their two worlds clash.
When it is discovered that an enemy far greater than Apex is threatening the entire planet, our heroes are sent on a desperate chase to reboot an archaic defense system before catastrophe hits. Humans and AI have very different ways of assessing their risk of total extinction, so instead of cooperating with each other, the war for survival intensifies, while Adam and Joan find themselves on opposite sides of the battlefield.
But unbeknownst to Adam, Joan has a secret that could destroy their relationship . . . and change the course of human history.
