Summary

This text critically addresses, through college student voices, the American school reform movement in its rhetoric, policy and practice. Drawing from a course taught by McKenna, Collier, and Burke, this book provides theoretical and practical demonstrations of how a university course can treat students, many of them future teachers, as engaged citizens and contributors to discussions of education and society. It showcases work done by students in the process of learning education reform policy, discusses the obstacles and problems encountered as students join conversations on reform at both their university and in society at large, and examines the particular ways in which authoritative discourse and personal experience come to form knowledge at the university level.

Author Biography

Kevin Burke is Faculty of Supervision and Instruction and Fellow of the Institute of Educational Initiatives at the University of Notre Dame, USA, where he works with practicing teachers through the Alliance for Catholic Education and teaches for the Education, Schooling, and Society program.

Brian Collier is Faculty of Supervision and Instruction and Fellow of the Institute of Educational Initiatives at the University of Notre Dame, USA, where he works with practicing teachers through the Alliance for Catholic Education and teaches for the Education, Schooling, and Society program.
 
Maria McKenna is Assistant Professor of the Practice for the Department of Africana Studies and the Education, Schooling, and Society Program at the University of Notre Dame, where she is also a Fellow at the Institute for Educational Initiatives and a teacher in the (ACE) Remick Leadership Program.
