The monopoly of place-based institutions controlling the college experience has been fundamentally shattered. Demographic changes, market pressures, and technological advancements have put into doubt the value proposition of traditional postsecondary pathways. This raises a host of questions: to what extent and in what ways does this impact the future of civic and community engagement in higher education? Does online learning undermine the raison d'être of community-based models of teaching, learning, and research? Author Biography

Scott L. Crabill is Associate Professor and Interim Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at Oakland University, USA, and is the academic leader responsible for the quality of university-wide undergraduate experience.

Dan W. Butin is Associate Professor and Founding Dean of the School of Education and Social Policy at Merrimack College, USA, and the Executive Director of the Center for Engaged Democracy. Butin is the author and editor of more than seventy academic publications and is the editor of Palgrave's series Community Engagement in Higher Education.
