Summary

"Compartments and Commitments" is a whimsical tale, flavored with amusing moments and insights, about a group of friends as they go about getting what they can out of life. There are aspects of their personalities and outlooks that we may recognize within ourselves, and in others in our family and social circles. Darrius Scott is an Information Technology professional. He tries to blend the logic and processes he uses in software development into varying aspects of his life style by compartmentalization. To him everything has a proper time and place. Ursula Adams has the need to be recognized as someone who is special, which in a way she is, and in a way she isn't. Her difficulty is that she doesn't know the difference. Despite being reasonably successful in life, Antwan Bellman has an unfulfilled, yet legitimate desire. But as a married man, his ability to attain it is limited. Leon Williams is also married and successful, but that doesn't stop him from going after what he wants. China Miller has a relatively simple ambition, to provide the proper upbringing for her daughter. She also is trying to deal with the hole in her life that was created by her recent divorce. A soul mate could help her to do that. There have been multiple prospects, but circumstances have made it difficult for her to make a solid decision on which one it should be. Felix Fredericks, who likes to refer to himself as Fast Forward Fred, is a devil-may-care free spirit who will sometimes do things just to see what kind of reaction he might get. He too has romantic aspirations, that he cleverly disguises, lest he reveal the compassionate side of his personality. As the protagonists go about living their lives, what they have to offer and expect in return, are sometimes in harmony. Sometimes they are not. To juice things a little, their friends and relatives do what friends and relatives tend to do, offer opinions on who should be doing what with whom. These offerings are sometimes not worth two cents, sometimes they are worth much more. Five o'clock Friday Work week is done. Gettin' in the wind Gonna get with the fun. Won't take much effort, Don't have to go far, Just across Broadway to Button's Urban Bistro and Bar. The story begins on a late Friday afternoon, just before Happy Hour. A task arises that requires Darrius's immediate attention. In his judgment, completion of the task would be as useful as warm beer and wet toilet paper. He is a consummate professional who takes great pride in his work, but he decides that immediate attention was going to have to wait until Monday. Then he and some of his co-workers are off to a nearby night spot to engage in fun and frolic. This is when their schemes and dreams, as well as those of their cohorts and consorts, come into play. Everybody is seeking something, and as they do, their individual strengths and flaws are revealed. As the saying goes, "Seek and ye shall find." What they find is not always what they expect. What they find brings about consequences. Some are serious, others are just curious; some collide while others coincide. All the while there is romance and happenstance, fondness and passion, resentment and contentment, and compartments and commitments. To take a peek at part of the opening chapter access this URL- http://gkn-novel.blogspot.com
