Conventions and Craft is six, grade-specific kits, K-5. Each kit will provide a year’s worth of conventions instruction (i.e., sentence structure, grammar, punctuation and capitalization, word consciousness, and general editing), with one concept, or understanding,” covered each week in a series of micro-workshop”ten minutes of instruction, most likely at the start of writing time. Understandings are derived from what CCSS, TEKS, and VSOL require for each gradeand can be taught in any sequence teachers choose. Over the five days, students see the understanding in action” in a mentor text (nonfiction book or magazine article) and in a piece of student writing, watch the teacher model how to apply the understanding in writing, and try out the understanding in their own writing. Lessons are meant to be quickagain, just ten minutes a day. No more. Because Conventions andCraft lessons are easy to implement and quick to do, we see the resource being a nice replacement for the old-fashioned, outdated (yet still widely used) Daily Oral Language” and a nice complement to Traits Writing, Trait Crates, and other forthcoming writing products that focus more on craft than conventions.
