Summary

A true account of one of the greatest crimes in the early twentieth century. At 1:07 a.m. on October 1, 1910, a catastrophic explosion ripped through theLos Angeles Timesbuilding, killing twenty-one men. When morning broke, two more undetonated bombs were discovered at the homes of prominent L.A. businessman Felix Zeehandelaar andTimespublisher Harrison Gray Otis. The first was successfully defused. The second was not, leaving the small city of Los Angeles in the grip of panic. The ensuing investigation spanned from San Francisco to the Midwest and involved such legendary figures as William J. Burns and Clarence Darrow. With political ramifications that threatened to bring the country to the brink of civil war, the subsequent court battle became the very first "Trial of the Century." Deadly Timesis a keyhole view of another America, one in which a young nation's extraordinary moral and economic promise was hobbled by the selfish aspirations of its plutocrats and the thuggish practices of a society of anarchists.
