[Called to Witness the Cross of Christ. Studies on the Foundations of the Protestant Theory of the Church] This Greifswald habilitation thesis delineates an ecclesiology from the perspective of a critical self-differentiation of the church, relying for the first time on church documents such as memoranda and reform programmes. Witness is the key concept of this study. Using this concept the church invokes its foundation in the cross of Jesus Christ, entering at the same time into community with different forms of this call. Analyses on F. Schleiermacher, A Ritschl and K. Barth prove the importance of this understanding of the church for the Protestant Churches since the 19th century. In the 20th century, this understanding of the church becomes important for inter-church relationships as well as for the relationships to society in general and to non-Christian religions. The Author was awarded the Hanns Lilje Prize for this book by the Gottingen Academy of Sciences in 2012.
