Summary

Responding to the expansion of scientific knowledge about the roles of nutrients in human health, the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine developed a set of nutrient reference values for healthy people, termed the Dietary Reference Intakes. These replace and expand upon the old Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) in the United States and the Recommended Nutrient Intakes (RNIs) in Canada.
