Summary

Tiny but perfectly-formed Dominica is one of the most naturally dramatic islands of the Lesser Antilles. This beautiful island with its verdant mountains, lush valleys and dense tropical rainforests is still off the mass-tourism trail. However, cruise ships, hikers, scuba divers and nature-lovers are starting to discover this gorgeous 'Nature Island of the Caribbean'. This second edition offers practical information on the growing health and wellness holidays, weddings and yachting parties as well as extended coverage of the rich cultural heritage. Dominica's dramatic scenery recently attracted Hollywood's attention and the island was location for the filming of the blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean.Paul Crask is a freelance writer, editor and Bradt author who has visited the island of Dominica since 1993 and is now a permanent resident.

Excerpts

Extract from ‘The Boiling Lake Hike’

Across the river the trail gets tougher as it climbs steeply towards the top of Morne Nicholls. After a further 45 minutes there is a circular clearing at the summit where, on a clear day, there are spectacular views across the Morne Trois Pitons National Park and the lands beyond. To the west is Roseau, to the north Morne Micotrin and behind it Morne Trois Pitons itself. To the east is the ridge of the Grande Soufriere Hills, to the south is Morne Watt, and to the southeast is the steam rising from the Valley of Desolation and the Boiling Lake. About five minutes or so before you reach this summit, there are open views down to the forest canopy on the right. It is worth pausing here for a little while as you frequently see jaco parrots in flight.
