Summary

Shedding light on how one of the world's most influential religions views one of the world's oldest institutions, this study examines marriage in the context of Islamic tradition and describes the beliefs that guide the behavior of spouses toward each other. Several examples of the importance of marriage within the Islamic framework are presented, such as the way Islam facilitated marriage, reducing the requirements of formality and easing the economic burden; the way the Prophet Muhammad encouraged Muslims to marryeven those who had rejected marriage and family to devote themselves to God; the manner in which the Prophet attempted to resolve conflicts within families to ensure the survival of peace within the family; and the way the Qur'an requires assistance for those who wish to marry but cannot due to economic or moral obstacles. Arrojando luz sobre la manera en la cual una de las religiones mas influyentes del mundo considera una de las instituciones mas viejas del mundo, este estudio examina el matrimonio dentro del contexto de la tradicion islamica y describe las creencias que guian la conducta de los conyuges el uno hacia el otro. Varios ejemplos de la importancia del matrimonio dentro del marco islamico son presentados, como la manera en la cual el Islam facilito el matrimonio, reduciendo las exigencias de formalidad y la carga economica; la manera en la cual el profeta Muhammad alento a los musulmanes a que se casaranincluyendo aquellos que habian renunciado el matrimonio y la vida familiar para ser mas devotos de Dios; la manera en la cual el Profeta se encargo de solucionar los conflictos entre los miembros de familia para asegurar la supervivencia y la serenidad en la familia; y la exigencia en el Coran de ayudar a aquellos que desean casarse pero que no pueden realizarlo debido a obstaculos economicos o morales.
