Summary

The aim of this book is to explain electrical and blast injuries to a variety of professionals from medical personnel to patients and their families. Since the last edition, a variety of topics has been added and adapted to address new information on electrical injuries.

Author Biography

Raymond Fish received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from the UIUC (University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign). He received a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Clark University, and an M.D. from the University of Chicago. Dr. Fish is board certified in Emergency Medicine, which he has practiced for over twenty-five years. Before entering medical practice he worked for three and a half years in electrical engineering and research, most of which was at the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke at NIH. Dr. Fish has appointments at the UIUC in the College of Medicine and in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. Dr. Fish has developed and taught a course at the UIUC entitled "The Physiology of Electrical Injury." He has also developed and taught laboratory and lecture courses on biomedical instrumentation. Dr. Fish is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Fish is currently working in the Bioacoustics Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.Leslie A. Geddes. In 2007 President Bush awarded the National Medal of Science and Technology to Dr. Geddes. He was born in Scotland and educated in Canada, where he received his B.S., M.S., and D.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering from McGill University, Montreal, Quebec. He received a Ph.D. in Physiology from Baylor University College of Medicine, Houston, TX. While at Baylor, he was Assistant, Associate, and then full Professor of Physiology and Director of the Division of Biomedical Engineering. In 1985 he was the Rosenstadt Professor of Health Science at the University of Toronto. At present he is the Showalter Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University. He continues to serve as a consulting editor to numerous scientific journals and was a consultant to NIH, FDA, NASA, and NSF. Dr. Geddes is a member of the American Physiology Society, and a fellow of the AAAS, the American College of Cardiology, the Australian College of Physical Scientists in Medicine, and the Royal Society of Medicine. He received the AEMB award for leadership in biomedical engineering in 1985 and was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in the same year. In 1986 he received the IEEE/EMBS Career Achievement Award. In 1994 he received the Edison Gold Medal from the IEEE, and in 1995 he was elected to Phi Zeta. In 2008 he was elected to the Purdue University Teaching Academy. He is a registered professional engineer and a member of the National Academy of Forensic Engineers.
