Summary

Project Description: The Encyclopedia of the Social and Cultural Foundations of Education is intended to provide a comprehensive introduction to the social and cultural foundations of education. The projected encyclopedia will be a three- volume work to appear in 2007. The first two volumes of the work will consist of A-Z entries, and a third volume will be made up of documentary, photographic, and visual resources. The two A-Z volumes will include essays (approximately 5,000 words each) representing the major disciplines (philosophy, history, sociology, etc.). These will anchor the work. Representative topics for the encyclopedia include: 1. Biographies of major educational theorists and practitioners 2. Essays on major movements in the field (The Radical Revisionist Movement in American Educational History, Deschooling, etc.) 3. Essays on policy issues (vouchers, standards, etc.) 4. Entries on institutions (historically black colleges and universities, Teachers College, Columbia University, the U. S. Department of Education, etc.) 5. Interpretations of major court decisions (Brown vs. Topeka (1954), Lau vs. Nichols (1972)) 6. Overviews of theoretical debates fundamental to the field (privilege, socioeconomic class, etc.) 7.
