Summary

Alfred Marshall has traditionally been listed alongside pioneering 'neoclassical' economists, playing an important role in developing the partial equilibrium comparative statics approach to economic analysis. However, in recent years, Marshall's work has been perceived in a new light; in this volume Neil Hart illuminates the ambiguities within the Principles and Marshall's reconciliation of two modes of thinking, equilibrium economics and cumulative causation. The complexity of the themes running through Marshall's work is also shown to have been fundamentally misunderstood in much subsequent literature, where debates reveal similar limitations to those that Marshall had struggled to overcome. Through the provision of a more rounded treatment of Marshall's work and intellectual and social environment, the author explores the influence and legacy of this eminent economist and his impact on modern economic analysis.
